As you already know, probabilities must sum to 1, but when updating probabilities based on evidence we are dealing with likelihood values that aren't exactly probabilities. To convert them back into probabilities, we need to normalize them by calculating likelihood ratios. The way to do this is easy: divide each column's x value by the sum of the x values. The result is that node's marginal probabilities (the P(P|e), P(B|e), and P(T|e) rows in Figure 5.4). Without any evidence the L+, x, and marginal probability values will be identical.
